Modern Apprentice - Stephen Mills

Stephen Mills joined us in November 1997 as a Steel Industry National Trainee in our Maintenance/Engineering Department. As well as having an in-company induction he also attended the Steel Industry Awareness Course to learn about all aspects of the industry as a whole. Stephen started his NVQ level 2 in Foundation Engineering and started working towards his key skills in numeracy, IT and communication. At King he started to learn about maintenance by shadowing our Maintenance Engineers. In 1998, Stephen passed his NVQ level 2 in Foundation Engineering, he achieved his National Traineeship in 1999 and in 2000 he completed his key skills to level 3. Stephen was switched to a Modern Apprenticeship in Technical Services and he spent 2000 on the shop floor in the Maintenance Department. Stephen completed his Modern Apprenticeship in 2002 but continues to undertake a variety of courses at college. He is now a crucial member of the Engineering departments and as well as undertaking maintenance jobs, he also is responsible for compiling and analyzing production figures, using AutoCAD for creating drawings and he is also capable of working in the Stores and the Weighbridge when required.

A Level Entry - Louise Dawson

Louise Dawson joined us as a Sales Office Trainee in 1988 after completing A Levels in English, French, Sociology and General Studies. Her responsibilities included administration and allocating and she had a couple of small accounts with customers. After 12 months she became an Account Controller and she was given more accounts to look after. She was responsible for ensuring that customers were supplied with steel that they have requested by liaising with the shopfloor, production and traffic planning. Sales forecasts and quotations for steel were also written. Whilst an Account Controller, Louise Dawson also undertook an Advanced Diploma in Sales Management at Sandwell College. Between 1990 and 1995 Louise undertook a part time BA hons degree in Business Studies at Wolverhampton University. In 1994 she was promoted to a Sales Representative and in 1997 she became an Account Manager in the Domestic Appliance Sales Division. Her main responsibility was now to manage and develop a group of customers. Louise also supervises two Account Controllers. In 1998 Louise successfully achieved her Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Graduate Entry - Justin Mansell

Justin Mansell joined us in January 1994 as a Quality Engineer. He joined the company as a graduate after successfully completing a B Eng Hons degree in Materials and Microstructural Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University. His responsibilities included identifying and dealing with quality problems with our steel and documenting this appropriately. He worked closely with the Quality Supervisor in order to learn the quality systems he had to follow and develop. In July 1996, Justin was promoted to the position of Senior Quality Engineer. He continued to develop himself by undertaking different modules at the Institute of Quality Assurance and he was given the project of implementing the QS9000 Automotive Quality Standard at the company. After the company successfully achieved this standard in April 1998, Justin Mansell was promoted to Quality Assurance Manager and he is now responsible for the Department with four employees.
